The former world no.14 Shuai Peng had a rather lousy season in 2016 because she had to cope with some injuries. Before the tournament in Tianjin, the Chinese has won only three matches this year. Eventually, Shuai won her maiden WTA title in China after taking full advantage of a wildcard.
Everything unfolded on Sunday when both Peng and Alison Riske (the other finalist) had to play two matches in a row. Shuai defeated Danka Kovinic 3-6 7-5 6-3 in the semi-final, before beating in the final 7-6 (3) 6-2.
