Elina Svitolina, the Ukrainian tennis star, has expressed her dismay over the recent clash between former US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The incident occurred during a high-stakes meeting at the White House, where Zelenskyy was reportedly ambushed by Trump and Vice President JD Vance. The meeting, which was expected to result in a significant deal concerning Ukraine’s mineral resources, ended abruptly without any agreement being signed.
Svitolina, who has been a vocal advocate for her country since the onset of the Russian invasion in 2022, shared her thoughts on the matter in an interview with The Athletic. She expressed her sadness over the situation, stating that Trump’s decisions have “really hurt the Ukrainians” and left her feeling “really sad for all innocent people” caught in the conflict. Despite the longstanding support from the United States, Svitolina feels that recent actions have not been as helpful, leading to a sense of unity among Ukrainians as they face unimaginable challenges and uncertainty.
This is what she said: “The United States has been helping us for a long period of time now. Our government is working really hard to still find the ways, the solutions for the decisions.
“They’re trying everything and to maybe find other ways, other allies, or something. We are just hoping for the best. We are living with the unimaginable challenges, pressure, and just not knowing what’s coming tomorrow.
Right now, I feel like we are united even more because we feel like the United States is not helping us much for the past few weeks.“So we have to unite, we have to help each other, for the country that we love. Trump just started and already made a lot of decisions that really hurt the Ukrainians. I’m just really sad for all innocent people.”
The tennis star has been actively involved in supporting her country on the global stage, participating in fundraisers and serving as an ambassador for United24, a fundraising body established to aid Ukraine following the invasion. Svitolina’s commitment to her homeland is evident in her continued efforts to raise awareness and support for Ukraine, even as she competes in international tennis tournaments.
The clash between Trump and Zelenskyy has drawn worldwide attention, highlighting the complexities of international diplomacy and the ongoing struggle for peace in Ukraine. As Svitolina prepares for upcoming tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami, her focus remains on representing her country and advocating for its interests on the global stage.
