Sascha Zverev is finally back to compete in Hamburg where the last time he played in the local ATP event was back in 2016.
This ATP500 is scheduled in a “weird” moment as it is played on clay and it is squeezed between Wimbledon (grass) and the upcoming North American stint that is played on hard courts. Therefore, with the exception of clay-court specialists, usually, the top players prefer to skip it to take some break after the Championships to then practice on hard courts.
Why Sacha Zverev decided to play in Hamburg
The German sensation is not having a fantastic year, and after losing in the opener in Wimbledon, he admitted that his confidence is “below zero.”
Therefore, Zverev took the opportunity to play in his home city hoping to find his best tennis level and he seems to be elated with his decision to comment:
“I wanted to be at home this year, play in Hamburg again where I know I am at home, the public will be behind me and where I know, I am liked.
I was incredibly happy to come back to Hamburg, just to be back home and sleep again in my child’s bed. After Wimbledon, I took a little vacation and went to Saint Tropez with friends. Now I have been back on clay, practicing for the last 10 days and it feels good.”
Dominic Thiem will be seeded no.1 followed by Sascha that will be the no.2.
Willkommen in #Hamburg, Alexander #Zverev!
