Zverer wins maiden title after upsetting Wawrinka

Alexander Zverev wins his first career title in style after beating the US Open champion Stan Wawrinka in the St. Petersburg final.

The German was in top form for the entire week, and he was 100% aware of the fact that he had a shot in the final also because the Swiss didn’t look very sharp during the tournament.

The final

After winning the first set, Zverev looked beaten after he lost five consecutive games in the second and third set. Therefore, Wawrinka had a strong 2-6 6-3 3-0 lead (from a 2-6 4-3 scoreline), but the Swiss couldn’t hold, and Zverev won the final 6-2 3-6 7-5.

This is a special victory. ZVEREV

Sasha has lost two finals this year against Thiem (Nice) and Mayer (Halle). Therefore, he was extremely happy to have won this one

“This victory is something special,” Zverev commented. “I played all the finals well. I lost to Dominic Thiem on clay, and I could have won against Florian Mayer on the grass… Now I’m very happy with the win, especially over such a great player like Stan.”

Slicing was the key

Alexander also explained what was the tactical key to winning the decider “In the third set, I had the initiative and played slice to his left more. I tried to neutralize his massive backhand.”
