In recent discussions about the state of tennis, Reilly Opelka’s suggestion to eliminate doubles has sparked considerable debate. Opelka, known for his outspoken nature, argued that doubles tennis is primarily for “failed singles players” and doesn’t generate enough interest or revenue to justify its place in professional tournaments.
Former tennis champion Andy Roddick, however, has a different perspective. On his podcast, “Served with Andy Roddick,” he candidly shared his thoughts on Opelka’s controversial stance. Roddick expressed his appreciation for Opelka’s candor, saying, “Listen, Reilly, love him or hate him, you rarely have to wonder what he’s thinking and he’s certainly not scared to tell you what he’s thinking. So, regardless of if you agree with the opinion, I kind of like characters like Reilly, who will just say what they’re thinking.”
Despite his respect for Opelka’s straightforwardness, Roddick made it clear that he disagrees with the notion of eliminating doubles. He believes that doubles tennis brings significant value to the sport and offers a different dimension that enriches the overall tennis experience.
Roddick’s comments highlight the importance of diverse opinions within the tennis community and the value of maintaining traditions that have been a part of the sport for decades. As the debate continues, it remains clear that doubles tennis has its staunch defenders and continues to be an integral part of the tennis world.
