Alexander Zverev had a horrible American summer to win just one match combined in Toronto, Cincinnati, and the US Open. Eventually, the German came back to winning ways in St. Petersburg to reach the quarters without dropping a single set.
The quarters against Youzhny were particularly smooth for the German that conceded just four games (and no breaks) to the Russian. The final score was 6-2 6-2.
Next vs. Berdych
Sasha will play Berdych for a place in the final. The head to head is 4-0 for the Czech, but Zverev has definitely a shot at him.
“I think he is a rising ATP star,” said Berdych. “I have already played against him a couple of times. We had a couple of good battles at the beginning of this year. One of them was the Davis Cup rubber which I won in five sets. I beat him again at Wimbledon this year. He is definitely a guy with a great future. He always makes me work hard on the court to beat him.”
