Iga Swiatek recently commented on the distressing stalking incident involving Emma Raducanu during the Dubai Tennis Championships. Raducanu was approached by a man at her hotel, who handed her a letter. The situation left her deeply disturbed, prompting her to report it to the WTA. The following day, Raducanu spotted the same man in the stands during her match against Karolina Muchova. After informing the chair umpire and tournament officials, the stalker was escorted out of the stadium and banned from attending WTA tournaments.
Swiatek praised the WTA’s swift response, emphasizing the importance of player safety. She also shared her own experience with a potentially dangerous fan situation in Poland. During an event in her home country, a fan appeared overly eager to get close to her. Fortunately, the situation was quickly resolved, and no harm came to Swiatek. She acknowledged that while most fans mean well, tennis players must always remain vigilant.
Swiatek expressed empathy for Raducanu, recognizing the difficulty of such situations. Raducanu later released a statement thanking everyone for their support and assuring that she would be okay. The incident has brought attention to the ongoing issue of player safety in tennis, with many athletes sharing their own experiences and concerns.
Iga said: “I know the WTA banned this person from going on-site anywhere on any tournament. So I guess the reaction was pretty solid,. I like that because it’s WTA’s responsibility to keep us safe, for that environment to be safe for us. I guess with their help it’s fine.”
“We were able to avoid one incident that might have been scary back in the day when I was hosting my own event in Poland,” the 23-year-old added.
“There are fans that are kind of, I don’t know, everywhere. But I’m pretty sure that they don’t have any bad intentions.”
The WTA continues to work closely with players to ensure their well-being and provide necessary support. The organization remains committed to maintaining a safe environment for all athletes.
