In a stunning upset at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha, Matteo Berrettini defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. This victory marks Berrettini’s first-ever win over the former world No. 1 and a significant milestone in his career.
After the match, Berrettini expressed his elation and relief, saying, “Something I’ve been looking to do for a long time. I’ve played against him in the most important tournaments on tour, had the honour and the pleasure to play against him. I wish I could have won one of those matches as well.”
The Italian’s performance was nothing short of spectacular. He delivered a high-quality display, winning 85 percent of points behind his first serve and striking 19 forehand winners. Berrettini’s aggressive and confident play left Djokovic struggling to find his rhythm.
Reflecting on his journey, Berrettini said, “I worked really hard to be back here, to be back at this level. I knew my level was high. I just needed matches and matches like this. All the hard work that I’ve been putting in the last months, in the last days, it worked pretty well today. So I’m really happy with my performance. I’m really happy because I enjoyed my time out there, which is the most important thing.”
Djokovic, who was playing his first match since retiring from his Australian Open semi-final due to a hamstring injury, acknowledged Berrettini’s superior performance. “I was outplayed by just a better player today,” Djokovic admitted. “Yes, I wasn’t at my desired level, and it could be that I’m still not moving the way I want to move, but I played without pain, so there is no excuse in that.”
Berrettini’s victory is a testament to his resilience and determination, especially after struggling with injuries over the past 18 months. His win over Djokovic is expected to boost his confidence as he continues to compete at the highest level.
