In the midst of a challenging period for Jannik Sinner, fellow Italian tennis player Lorenzo Sonego has publicly expressed his unwavering support for the world number one. Sinner, who has been embroiled in a doping controversy, recently accepted a three-month ban from tennis after testing positive for traces of clostebol, a banned substance.
Sonego, known for his camaraderie and sportsmanship, has stood by Sinner throughout the ordeal. In a recent interview, Sonego stated, “Jannik can always count on me. The wait will only increase his desire to return stronger.” He emphasized that the lengthy process and waiting for verdicts in such cases are not suitable for a sport like tennis and that most of their colleagues understand the situation could happen to anyone.
Sinner’s suspension, which lasts until May 4, means he will miss several key tournaments, including the Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, and Madrid Masters 1000 events. However, he will be able to return in time for the French Open, which begins on May 25 at Roland Garros.
Sonego believes that Sinner will come back even stronger after the suspension. “In my opinion, he will return stronger than before. He loves tennis, and being forced to stay away from competitions will only increase his desire to play,” Sonego remarked.
The support from Sonego and other players in the tennis community highlights the solidarity among athletes during difficult times. Sinner’s acceptance of the ban and his commitment to returning to the sport with renewed determination have been met with encouragement and optimism from his peers.
