Zverev on Sinner’s 3-month suspension: “It’s a weird situation. It’s either you have to decide was it his fault or was it not his fault”

World No. 2 Alexander Zverev criticized Jannik Sinner's three-month suspension for a doping case with WADA, citing ambiguity and the need for a fair and consistent doping regulation. Sinner, despite the suspension, remains eligible for the French Open.

World No. 2 Alexander Zverev recently commented on the three-month suspension of top-ranked tennis player Jannik Sinner. Sinner accepted the ban to settle a doping case with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The case involved trace amounts of the banned anabolic steroid Clostebol found in Sinner’s system, which he attributed to accidental contamination during a massage.

Zverev described the situation as “weird” and highlighted the ambiguity surrounding the incident. He pointed out that it’s challenging to determine whether Sinner was at fault or not. According to Zverev, if Sinner is not guilty, he shouldn’t face any suspension. Conversely, if he is guilty, a three-month ban seems insufficient for a doping violation.

The suspension, which runs from February 9 to May 4, means Sinner will miss several important tournaments but will still be eligible to compete in the French Open. Despite the controversy, Sinner maintains that he did nothing wrong and has taken responsibility for his team’s actions.

Zverev’s remarks reflect the broader debate within the tennis community about the fairness and consistency of doping regulations. The resolution of Sinner’s case has brought some closure, but it has also raised questions about the accountability of athletes and their support teams.

Thisis what he said: “It’s a weird situation because it’s been obviously a very long process where first he is cleared, then obviously WADA wanted to have a second look at it and stuff like that. To me, I think, you know, there’s two options.

Either you’re at no fault and you should get no suspension at all. Because if you have no fault, then you have no fault. You shouldn’t get punished. But if you do have fault, then I think for taking steroids, three months is not a suspension.

So for me, it’s either you have to decide was it his fault or was it not his fault. If it’s not his fault then he shouldn’t get a three-month suspension but if it is his fault then this is weird in a way. The whole process, the whole situation that has been there for the past year almost it’s been just strange”.
