Juan Martin Del Potro may have preferred to beat Murray 1 month ago in the final in the Olympic Games in Rio, but this win is not that bad either.
Andy and Juan Martin played a fantastic five setter in their first match in the Davis Cup semifinal. Even if Andy was the clear favorite, the Brit was mentally tired after playing four months at a very high level while Del Potro is resurging from his wrist injury. Therefore, the Argentine knew he had a shot at the match, and he produced a fantastic performance to beat Andy 6-4 5-7 6-7 (5) 6-3 6-4 in 5 hours and 7 minutes’ dogfight.

Del Potro gave me more emotions in last month than all these Nole Rafa Andy combined in last 5 years: thanks JMDP! pic.twitter.com/w8AJDd8vIf

This is very important for us. DEL POTRO
After the match, Juan Martin commented
“I won, but I still remember the Olympic final. This is very important to me and my team, and we are looking to reach another final in the Davis Cup.
Against Andy, you never know when the match will finish. He is a dangerous player, a fighter and great champion. In the end, I played good forehands and good serves, and that was key.”
In the other singles, Pella defeated Edmund 6-7 (5) 6-4 6-3 6-2.
Argentina leads now 2-0, and it is the clear favorite to reach the final. The key match should be Del Potro Edmund on Sunday (if Great Britain wins the doubles).
