Jannik Sinner, the world number one tennis player, recently accepted a three-month ban after testing positive for traces of the banned substance clostebol. The positive tests were attributed to a spray used by his physiotherapist to treat a cut. Despite Sinner’s insistence that he had no intent to cheat and did not gain any competitive advantage and the official statment of WADA confirming the Italian, the controversy surrounding the case has drawn significant attention.
Several fellow tennis players have publicly criticized Sinner, with some calling the situation “ridiculous” and expressing doubts about the integrity of the sport. Notably, Australian player Nick Kyrgios and three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka have voiced their strong opinions, with Wawrinka stating, “I don’t believe in a clean sport anymore.”
The Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), co-founded by Novak Djokovic, has also denounced the handling of the case, emphasizing the need for fairness and transparency in the sport. Despite the backlash, Sinner has maintained his stance, accepting responsibility for his team’s actions and expressing his commitment to upholding the sport’s integrity.
Fellow Italian Andrea Vavassori had harsh words toward some of his colleagues who keep on accusing Sinner for what has happened. During a recent interview with an Italian outlet (La Gazzetta dello Sport), Andrea commented: “The ignorance of colleagues who attack Jannik is really annoying. It’s clear that many tennis players, I say this without offense, have not studied much and therefore cannot understand what they read.”
