Feliciano Lopez has come forward to defend Jannik Sinner against remarks made by Stan Wawrinka regarding Sinner’s recent doping settlement. Sinner, the World No. 1, accepted a three-month ban after a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The ban was due to Sinner testing positive for clostebol, a banned anabolic steroid. However, an independent tribunal found no fault or negligence on Sinner’s part.
Wawrinka expressed his disappointment, stating, “I don’t believe in a clean sport anymore”. In response, Lopez argued that Sinner had taken full responsibility for the mistake made by a member of his support team and that a longer suspension would not have made the sport cleaner. Lopez emphasized that Sinner’s suspension was fair and that he had done nothing to enhance his performance.
The tennis community remains divided on the issue, with some players supporting Wawrinka’s stance and others agreeing with Lopez. As the debate continues, it is clear that the incident has sparked a broader conversation about fairness and integrity in sports.
