Wawrinka asks for more transparency over medical time out

Stan Wawrinka is a highly happy man right now, and he definitely does not want to create any useless tension between him and his dear friend Novak Djokovic.

What happened?

During the US Open final, the world no.1 suffered from some injuries, and he was completely knocked out for a bleeding toe. Novak had to ask for a medical timeout while trailing 3-1 in the 4th set. Stan was clearly upset because of that since he was on a roll and that was definitely disrupting his rhythm. Eventually, the medical time-out was legit because Djokovic was really struggling; the problem was a sort of lack of communication that left Wawrinka wondering what was really going on. Djokovic apologized with Stan, and everything was fine between the two, but some question mark remained.

We need more transparency for medical time-outs. WAWRINKA

During a recent interview, Stan commented

“I was just surprised with the timing. Normally you don’t take it before your opponent is going to serve.

When they explained it to me, I was just trying to be ready for the point I was going to play afterward because I was really starting to struggle physically. I was starting to cramp, and we all know that during the match when you are still warm you can keep it, but I didn’t want to get cold and then the body reacts badly to that.

I think sometimes some players abuse the rules for sure. Yesterday when he took the second time-out they told me it was because he was bleeding, and I have no problem with that. But sometimes I feel also from outside no-one tells people what’s happening. People outside or behind, they cannot see.”
