Roger Federer: how long does the Swiss legend have left?

After more than a decade of domination, tennis legend Roger Federer may even be on the cusp of announcing his retirement in the not-so-distant future. The Swiss veteran, who has won a record 17 Grand Slam titles, suffered serious knee and back injuries earlier this year – two long-term setbacks that forced him to withdraw from the Olympic Games and the US Open.

Will Roger retire any soon?

Federer will go down as one of the all-time greats; there is no doubt about it. But will he win another Grand Slam event before he announces his impending retirement? At 35 years old, he hasn’t got long to recover fully from his surgery and get back to his best. Unfortunately, age might catch up with him in the coming months, and he could even consider retiring before his return in order to maintain his legacy. Just look at how Rafael Nadal has struggled in recent times…

Hopefully he will hang there

However, it would be foolish to write him off just yet. The Swiss athlete has shown plenty of mental strength throughout his illustrious career, and he could yet feature in the Australian Open at the beginning of the new calendar year. As of August 30th, Federer is 10/1 to win that particular event and tennis punters will be considering a bet on the Swiss man; they’d certainly be backing him in Bet365’s US Open betting odds if he was involved.

The US Open is usually a real celebration of the sport, but it has felt a little low-key so far. Even Nadal, Federer’s great rival for so many years, has revealed that it has all felt a little different this year. It is missing at least one-star name, and although it would be naive to make a bold statement, Federer seems confident in his own ability to bounce back, and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see him back in action at Flushing Meadows.

Federer has been superb for so long but time is running out, and he knows it. With 17 Grand Slam titles in the bag, he will forever be remembered as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. The Swiss is not only a superb player but an incredible icon and rising stars look to his work – both on and off the court – as the benchmark for success.

Will Federer retire after 2017?

Only time will tell, but it looks like 2017 could be Federer’s last season on the professional tour. The Swiss star has earned the right to retire when the time is right for him, and he may give himself another 12 months to try and extend his record of Grand Slam victories.

Whether he wins another one or not, Roger Federer will always be held closely in the hearts of most tennis fans and the sport will be a sadder place without him.
