Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka will fight for the US Open title.
Djokovic
Nole had definitely the strangest slam of his career. The Serbinator has won 3 matches for retirement before playing an extremely odd semi-final against Gael Monfils that displayed a weird behavior. Even if Nole is clearly not at his peak, he has managed to get through, and to reach the final act in New York.
Talking about Wawrinka, Djokovic commented
“I haven’t played Stan in some time now. But he’s a big match player. He loves to play on the big stage against big players because that’s when he elevates his level of performance in his game. He gets much better.”
Wawrinka
Stan is having one of his tournaments. The Swiss has survived a match point against Evans in the third round, and he has managed to turnaround a sticky semifinal against Nishikori when the Japanese was destroying him (Kei was 1 set, one break up and in full control). This is the third slam final for Wawrinka in 3 years; Stan has a fantastic record in the finals in the last three years to win 10 of 10.
Wawrinka released the following comments
“To play Novak, the No. 1 player, is always really challenging. But we’ve had some big matches together, especially in Grand Slams. Some amazing matches, for sure. The secret is simple: I have to play my best tennis, my best game. He’s the No. 1 player, an amazing fighter, and an amazing player. Mentally, he’s a beast. It’s not easy to play him. I’m sure he’s going to bring his best tennis for the final.”
The Favorite: Wawrinka
Even if Djokovic can win any match nowadays, the world no.1 is struggling big time with all sorts of injuries; it’s clear he is not feeling invincible, and Wawrinka knows that. Djokovic leads Wawrinka 20-4 in the head to head match, but they are 2-all in slams.
If Wawrinka is not off for whatever reason, Stan should get it, but… never trust the Serbinator it would not be the first time he surprises us.
Game on!
