Novak Djokovic has always taken pride in his heritage, and his connection to Montenegro remains a significant part of his identity. The 24-time Grand Slam champion recently opened up about his love for the Balkan nation, where his grandfather, Vladimir Djokovic, was born.
In an interview with RTCG, Djokovic shared fond memories of his grandfather and how his bond with Montenegro has influenced his life. “I’m emotional when you mention my late grandfather,” Djokovic said. “He was always there when needed, when maybe I didn’t have anyone to go to training with when my parents were busy with work.”
The Serbian superstar often visits Montenegro, describing the experience as therapeutic and deeply fulfilling. “I am very proud of my roots,” Djokovic stated. “For the last five to six years, I have been coming to Montenegro for training. I got married in St. Stefan, and my children’s names—Stefan and Tara—are inspired by Montenegrin landmarks.”
Djokovic also revealed that he trained in Budva before the Paris Olympics, seeking inspiration from the environment. “I like to do most of my training in private, but occasionally I also like the audience to be present,” he said. “Before the Olympics, I needed a little encouragement, and the support I received truly motivated me in Paris.”
Beyond tennis, Djokovic cherishes the Montenegrin lifestyle, recalling visits to Durmitor in winter and summers spent by the coast. “My mother fell in love with Montenegro and visits often,” he shared. “Whenever I get free time, I come here because I enjoy the privacy, and the training conditions suit me perfectly.”
Djokovic emphasized the warmth of the Montenegrin people and their deep respect for sports. “People are extremely kind in Boka and Budva,” he noted. “It’s wonderful to see many children playing outside and chasing the ball.”
As Djokovic continues his journey in tennis, his ties to Montenegro remain a source of strength and inspiration, fueling his passion for both his sport and his heritage.
