The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has announced a significant change to the schedule of the US Open Mixed Doubles Championship for 2025. The championship will now take place during the first week of the US Open, known as Fan Week, from Tuesday, August 19 to Wednesday, August 20.

This move aims to elevate the status of the Mixed Doubles Championship by giving it its own spotlight, separate from the main singles draw. The event will be held in the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium, providing a grand stage for the competition.

One of the primary reasons for this change is to attract top singles players who might not have participated in the mixed doubles event previously. The USTA hopes that by scheduling the championship earlier, more of the sport’s biggest stars will have the opportunity to compete for the coveted Grand Slam title and a $1 million winner’s prize.

The new format will feature 16 pairs competing over two days, with the semifinals and final broadcasted on ESPN2 in prime time. The scoring system will also be adjusted, with sets played to four games and sudden death deuce, and a 10-point tiebreak at 4-41.

The decision to move the Mixed Doubles Championship follows the success of the “Mixed Madness” exhibition event held during last year’s Fan Week, which featured top players like Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas. The positive feedback from players and fans alike encouraged the USTA to make this radical change.

Jessica Pegula, the 2023 US Open mixed doubles finalist, expressed her excitement about the new schedule, highlighting the importance of innovation in growing the sport and engaging more fans. However, some doubles specialists, like six-time Grand Slam doubles champion Rajeev Ram, have voiced concerns about the new entry process, which prioritizes combined singles rankings.

Overall, the USTA is optimistic that this change will not only enhance the Mixed Doubles Championship but also set a new standard for mixed doubles events in tennis. With increased prize money and prime-time coverage, the 2025 US Open Mixed Doubles Championship is poised to be a thrilling addition to the tournament.
