After his Australian Open final loss to Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev admitted he felt he was “not good enough” to win a Grand Slam. It was his third defeat in a major final, following losses to Dominic Thiem at the 2020 US Open and Carlos Alcaraz at the 2024 French Open. However, his Melbourne Park defeat was particularly disheartening, as Sinner claimed a straight-sets victory, 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3.
At the time, a devastated Zverev expressed his frustration, acknowledging Sinner’s dominance while doubting his own ability to capture a Grand Slam title. However, with time to reflect, the German has taken a more positive approach. Ahead of the Argentina Open, he admitted regretting his words and emphasized the importance of self-belief.
“I kind of regret saying that maybe I’m not good enough,” Zverev said. “I have to keep believing in myself and believe that I am good enough to win Grand Slams and become world No. 1 if I keep improving.”
Now ranked No. 2 behind Sinner, Zverev clarified that his performance in Australia simply wasn’t up to par that day, unlike his previous Slam finals where he had real chances to win. He specifically recalled his heartbreaking 2020 US Open loss to Thiem, where he led by two sets and served for the match.
As he prepares for his next tournaments, Zverev remains determined to break through and finally claim his first Grand Slam title.
