Bianca Andreescu’s planned return to tennis has hit another roadblock as the former world No. 4 underwent an emergency appendectomy. The Canadian star, who has been struggling with lingering back issues and had not played any tournaments since October, was set to make her comeback at the WTA 500 event in Merida later this month. However, an unexpected bout of sharp stomach pain forced her into surgery, pushing back her anticipated return.

In a heartfelt Instagram update, Andreescu explained, “Hey everyone. Quick life update—training was going so well and I was very excited for the Merida Open to be my first tournament of the 2025 season. However, I unexpectedly started experiencing some sharp pain in my stomach, which led to an emergency appendectomy. The surgery went smoothly, and I’m on the road to recovery. My plan is to be back on the court for the clay season, stronger than ever. Thanks so much for all your support. Can’t wait to get back to competing!”

The setback means that Andreescu will also miss the Sunshine Double and the major tournaments at Indian Wells and Miami. Despite her current challenges, the 24-year-old remains optimistic about her recovery. If all goes well, she hopes to be ready to compete again in time for the clay season in April.

Throughout her career, Andreescu has battled recurring injuries and health setbacks, as well as taking breaks to focus on her mental well-being. Last year, she had a brief season restart at the French Open and compiled an 11-10 record before ending her run early. Even amidst a five-match losing streak prior to her Tokyo quarterfinal appearance in 2024, Andreescu’s resilience has always shone through.
