Holger Rune, the Danish world No. 14, experienced another setback at the Rotterdam Open, falling in the second round to Pedro Martinez, a player ranked 30 spots lower. This defeat marks his fourth loss of the season, including his Davis Cup appearance, with three of those coming against opponents ranked outside the top 20. Despite an earlier win against Lorenzo Sonego in the same tournament, Rune’s performance appeared hampered by illness.

According to his team, Rune has been battling a bout of flu. His mother, Aenke, confirmed that after the Davis Cup, the 21-year-old experienced high fever and had to see a doctor in Denmark, spending the day in bed. Rune echoed these concerns on social media, mentioning that he “couldn’t hold his fever down” and expressing hope to return to full fitness soon.

Looking ahead, Rune is set to travel to South America for the Argentina Open, where he is the second highest-ranked player in the draw after Alexander Zverev. His participation remains uncertain, as his team has yet to confirm whether the flu will affect his upcoming tournament.
