Carlos Alcaraz has addressed the challenges posed by the frequent changes in balls and playing conditions on the ATP Tour, highlighting their potential contribution to player injuries. The 20-year-old Spaniard expressed his belief that adjustments would be made while assuring that he had not yet faced any physical setbacks due to these issues.

On February 4, Alcaraz began his campaign at the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam, facing Botic van de Zandschulp in the first round. The top seed sought to avenge his early exit at the hands of the Dutchman in last year’s US Open. In a competitive contest that lasted two hours and 33 minutes, Alcaraz secured a hard-fought 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-1 victory despite a strong challenge from his opponent.

During the post-match press conference, Alcaraz was questioned about the difficulties of adjusting to the constantly changing conditions on tour. Acknowledging the problem, he pointed out the impact on players’ physical well-being and called for necessary reforms. “I think last year there were many injuries, many players with elbow or shoulder issues. Something needs to change. I know they will change it. Every week, practically every week, we have different balls, different conditions, so it’s complicated to adapt to them,” Alcaraz stated.

Despite these concerns, the two-time Grand Slam champion emphasized his commitment to maintaining peak physical condition. “However, we are here to give our best and give the best of ourselves. I have not had physical problems because of it so far, I work every day to be in shape, right now I’m fine,” he added.

As discussions around the standardization of balls and court conditions continue, Alcaraz’s remarks add to the growing calls for consistency, aiming to protect players from unnecessary physical strain.
