Laura Robson has advised Emma Raducanu to carefully consider her next coaching decision, warning that another swift change could reignite criticism over her history of frequent coaching moves. The former British No. 1 has already worked with several coaches early in her career and recently found stability by spending the entire 2024 season under the guidance of Nick Cavaday. However, with Cavaday stepping away from coaching due to health concerns, Raducanu is once again without a permanent coach.
Robson stressed the importance of patience in making the right choice to avoid further scrutiny. “I don’t think she’s going to rush into it,” she said in an interview with Sky Sports. “It’s got to be the right person because if she goes for someone and ends up changing it quickly everyone will go nuts again.”
Raducanu’s frequent coaching changes had previously drawn criticism, with many believing that the instability hindered her development. While she is currently without a coach, she continues to work with Yutaka Nakamura, her fitness trainer, who has significant experience on the tour. Robson noted that his presence could provide some guidance during this transitional period. “She has Yutaka with her and he has huge experience on the tour, so he might be able to help,” Robson added.
Speaking at the Abu Dhabi Open, Raducanu indicated that she is not in a rush to appoint a new coach and is taking time to assess what she truly values in her next hire. “So I think I’m using this time period to just figure out what I really value. I’m not too sure yet right now. I haven’t come to any plans or decisions,” she explained. “So yeah, I’m just taking it, using the next couple weeks to see how I feel, and then make a decision.”
As she competes in Abu Dhabi, where she faces Marketa Vondrousova, Raducanu appears focused on gaining clarity regarding her coaching needs. While the decision remains uncertain, she is determined to ensure that her next move is the right one for her long-term development.
