Jannik Sinner continues to solidify his place at the pinnacle of world tennis, having recently claimed his third Grand Slam title at the 2025 Australian Open. The world No. 1 secured his third consecutive Major on hard courts, following his victories at the 2024 Australian Open and 2024 US Open, further establishing a significant gap between himself and his competitors.
Following his triumph in Melbourne, Sinner opted to take a short break before resuming his competitive schedule. He announced his withdrawal from the ATP 500 event in Rotterdam, where he was the defending champion, citing medical advice to rest after the demanding tournament and long journey back from Australia. The 23-year-old agreed to step away from the court temporarily and will return to practice next week. His only competition in February will be the ATP 500 event in Doha, after which he will shift his focus to the prestigious Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami.
However, Sinner’s decision to forgo an official visit to Rome to meet Italian President Sergio Mattarella has sparked criticism. The world No. 1 attributed his absence to feeling unwell, yet photos circulated on social media showing him skiing with children at Plan de Corones, near San Candido, over the weekend. The images have fueled controversy, with some accusing him of disrespecting the President.

Despite his extraordinary achievements over the past year, Sinner has faced repeated criticism in Italy. His absence from certain Davis Cup ties has drawn scrutiny, and his decisions to skip the Tokyo 2021 and Paris 2024 Olympics also became matters of national debate. As Sinner continues his ascent in the tennis world, his choices off the court remain a topic of discussion in his home country.
