Andy Murray was expected to have an easy match against Paolo Lorenzi in the US Open 3rd round, but eventually the Brit had to battle hard.

What happened?

Andy was struggling to control the ball in the first two sets to win the opener in the tiebreak and lose the second set at 5. Eventually, the Brit found the way to win the match playing a more conservative tennis. The final result was 7-6 (4) 5-7 6-2 6-3 and the match lasted 3 hours and 17 minutes.

The key to winning the match

According to Andy, a critical move was to restrings the rackets and put a higher tension to help with the ball control. A more conservative tennis gave some additional help.

“I stopped rushing in the rallies. I was making quite a few unforced errors,” said Murray

“He’s an extremely solid player and doesn’t give you many cheap points. I was trying to get cheap points; I was going for too much. When I slowed things down and waited for the right shot to go for, my unforced errors went down; the winners went up, and the scoreboard started working in my favor.”

Next vs. Dimitrov

Murray will have a tough 4th round against a regenerated Grigor Dimitrov. The head to head is 6-3 for Andy, but Grigor has won the last one in Miami this year. This is going to be the most interesting 4th round of this US Open.

“It will be a tough match,” Murray commented. “Grigor has been playing well the last few weeks. He’s a tough player, moves well. Got a lot of good shots. Very talented guy. Hopefully, I play a good match; I’ll need to if I want to win.”
