Emma Raducanu faced a tough start to her Singapore Open campaign, suffering an early exit after a grueling three-hour match against world No 101 Cristina Bucsa. The match, which ended in a 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 victory for Bucsa, featured 17 breaks of serve and tested both players to their limits. Despite the loss, Raducanu remained optimistic, highlighting the positives from the match.
Raducanu, who had recently parted ways with her childhood coach Nick Cavaday due to health issues, was accompanied by her mother and new fitness trainer Yutaka Nakamura. She expressed pride in how she handled herself during the match and emphasized the importance of gaining match experience. “I feel like I have certain things we all manage as the year goes on. I think it’s pretty early in the season. For me to be playing this kind of match, all I need is time on court and a match-competitive situation, which I got today. I got it in abundance – over three hours of it – so, for me, it’s really valuable because every match I play, I feel like it’s a win.”
Raducanu’s positive outlook and determination to build on her performance will be crucial as she continues her journey in the tennis season. Her resilience and ability to find value in every match will undoubtedly serve her well in future competitions.
