Daniil Medvedev has been hit with a total of $76,000 in fines following a pair of on-court outbursts during his short-lived Australian Open campaign. The former U.S. Open champion’s frustrations boiled over in both the first and second rounds, leading to hefty penalties from tournament organizers.
Medvedev’s troubles began in his opening-round match against world No. 418 Kasidit Samrej, a contest that unexpectedly stretched to five sets. During the match, the Russian repeatedly struck a small camera attached to the net with his racket, smashing it to pieces. This act of destruction earned him a $10,000 fine. Despite the dramatic display, Medvedev dismissed the incident post-match, joking, “The camera is going to cost some, but I don’t think a GoPro is that expensive.”
The situation escalated during Medvedev’s second-round encounter against 19-year-old American qualifier Learner Tien. Frustrated by the teenager’s relentless play, which included a perfect lob that broke Medvedev’s serve, the fifth seed launched his racket toward the sideline, striking an advertising panel. Additional moments of anger saw Medvedev hit a ball against the back wall, topple a baseline camera, and punch his racket bag. The fines for these incidents amounted to a staggering $66,000.
Adding to his woes, Medvedev also voiced displeasure over consecutive foot-fault calls during a critical second-set tiebreaker, a moment that seemed to rattle his composure further. The marathon match ultimately concluded in favor of Tien, with the American securing a hard-fought victory in four hours and 49 minutes, ending shortly before 3 a.m.
Medvedev, a three-time Australian Open finalist, struggled to find his form in Melbourne, perhaps impacted by his lack of match play following the recent birth of his second child. The fines mark a sour start to the 28-year-old’s 2025 season, underscoring both his passion and the consequences of letting emotions spill over on the court.
