Emma Raducanu faced the joint-heaviest defeat of her career at the Australian Open, falling 6-1, 6-0 to second seed Iga Swiatek in the third round. Despite the lopsided scoreline, the British No.2 took the loss in stride, using it as an opportunity to identify areas for growth.

Acknowledging Swiatek’s stellar performance, Raducanu admitted, “It was a match going into it I knew I had to play really well. Credit to Iga; she played good tennis. It was a combination of her playing well and me not playing so well.”

Raducanu emphasized her serve as a focal point for improvement, noting that being broken 16 times across six sets was detrimental to her game. “The thing I want to improve is serving,” she said. “If I’m not able to hold my service games or dictate, it seeps into the rest of my game.”

The 22-year-old arrived in Melbourne with limited preparation due to a back injury but viewed her third-round appearance as a positive. “Three weeks ago, I was doing pool rehab. To be on a tennis court competing is something I have to be grateful for,” she reflected.

Swiatek, meanwhile, delivered a near-flawless performance, showcasing her dominance as a front-runner. The second seed, aiming for her first Australian Open title, remarked, “The ball is listening to me. All the tactics I wanted to execute worked perfectly. This match was kind of perfect for me.”

Raducanu remains optimistic about her journey, vowing to return stronger. With her next tournament in Singapore, she expressed her readiness to implement lessons learned: “I have good things to work on and feedback. My goal is to stay consistent and improve.”

Though the defeat was tough, Raducanu’s rational approach and determination to develop her game suggest she is focused on building for the future.
