After overcoming an injury to defeat her friend Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 7-5, Emma Raducanu advanced to the third round of the Australian Open for the first time.

Despite needing treatment for what appeared to be a lower back problem that had been bothering her since a spasm before Christmas, the 22-year-old persevered and will take on the formidable Iga Swiatek on Saturday.

Raducanu talked about it and said: “I’m looking forward to testing my game against the best. Ultimately, you play tennis, and you live for these matches. It’s going to be a great buzz of adrenaline.”

What matters now is that Raducanu demonstrated perseverance fans have rarely seen before in winning despite physical discomfort, even though she will undoubtedly not last much longer in Melbourne if she is even slightly suspected of being injured going into that match.

Fans were very happy with Raducanu reaching the Australian Open 3rd round. One fan wrote: “Lets go, Emma.”

Another wrote: “Great job, Emma.”

One weighed in: “Another fantastic win; each point was a game within itself. You handled the game and yourself so well; be proud; we are to be your fans. Luv’s ya stuff, Em’s.”

Another commented: “You continue to inspire, Emma.”
