After surpassing Roger Federer’s record to win his 430th Grand Slam singles match at the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic said he was fortunate to set yet another record.
In celebration, the ten-time champion kissed Andy Murray, his new coach. During a changeover against world No. 125 Jaime Faria, the Serbian superstar yelled into his towel in frustration after dropping a set for the second straight match played here.
Djokovic, however, took control of the match and won 6-1, 6-7, 6-3, and 6-2, aiming for a record 25th Grand Slam singles title. With his fourteenth ace, he completed the victory and set yet another record.
Djokovic said in the post-match discussion: “Yesterday Medvedev played 5 sets. In the wise words of Mr. Medvedev, if the future generation plays this way, they’re going to have everything. Money, girls, casino.”
Fans were amused by Djokovic’s comments after winning the AO 2nd round. One fan wrote: “Djokovic channeling Medvedev’s humor perfectly.”
Another commented: “Lmao, he really said that. Medvedev is tennis. Tennis is Medvedev.”
One fan weighed in: “No way he called his full name like that.”
Another wrote: “Haha, congratulations.”
