Emma Raducanu impressed seven-time Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander with her first-round Australian Open victory over No. 26 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova. Raducanu, ranked 61st in the world, overcame struggles with her serve to secure a gritty 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) win in Melbourne.
Despite being broken six times, Raducanu matched her opponent with six breaks of her own and delivered in both tie-breaks to advance. Wilander commended the 22-year-old’s performance, highlighting her potential. “Every time I see her, there’s no question she can become one of the best in the world if she stays healthy,” he told Eurosport.
Raducanu now faces Amanda Anisimova in the second round, a formidable opponent known for her powerful groundstrokes. Wilander noted the challenge ahead but expressed enthusiasm for Raducanu’s resurgence, saying, “I love seeing Emma back.”
