Novak Djokovic has expressed disappointment over the handling of Rafael Nadal’s retirement ceremony during the 2024 Davis Cup Finals, calling it “improperly done.” Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, retired following Spain’s quarter-final loss to the Netherlands in November, marking the end of his storied career.

Djokovic revealed that both he and Andy Murray had planned to attend a more significant ceremony during the semi-finals, had Spain progressed. “Murray and I were a sure thing for the semis, but the quarters didn’t fit our schedules,” Djokovic explained.

The Serbian shared his thoughts on the understated farewell: “The ceremony wasn’t done properly. Maybe Rafa didn’t want a fuss or thought he might play again. I feel bad I wasn’t there.”

Nadal’s final match was a defeat to Botic van de Zandschulp, followed by an emotional on-court speech and a tribute video featuring Djokovic, Murray, Roger Federer, and Serena Williams. However, Davis Cup captain David Ferrer and other close figures to Nadal, including Toni Nadal and Carlos Moya, expressed disappointment at the low-profile sendoff.

Djokovic and Nadal’s rivalry, spanning 60 matches over nearly two decades, remains a defining chapter in tennis history. Djokovic’s candid comments highlight his respect for Nadal and regret over the missed opportunity to honor his longtime competitor more fittingly.
