Angelique Kerber is now two steps away from grabbing the world no.1 rank.
In the Cincinnati quarters, the German defeated Carla Suarez Navarro after a false start; Angelique was 1 set and 1 break down (4-6 0-1) to find her range in the middle part of the second set (2-all). From that moment, Kerber won 10 of the following 11 games. The final score was 4-6 6-3 6-0.
I had to shorten the rallies. KERBER
After the match, Angelique shared what was the trick that helped her to turn around this quarter-final.
“I think I changed a little bit my game in the second set: I was trying to go for it when I have the chance and to making the rallies a little bit shorter. I was still thinking that I can turn around the match even after losing the first set and going down a break early in the next set.”
The semi vs. Halep
Kerber will face Simona Halep in the semifinal. Thea head to head is 3-2 for the Romanian (3-0 for Simona on hard courts). The last time they have played was 20 days ago in the Rogers Cup semi when Halep won 6-0 3-6 6-2. Angelique needs to reverse that if she wants a shot at becoming the new world no.1
