Following his thrilling five-set victory over young countryman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard at the Australian Open on Tuesday, Gael Monfils declared that age was just a number.

After winning the Auckland Classic on Saturday, the flamboyant Monfils became the oldest singles champion in the history of the ATP Tour.

With his arms raised in celebration just after a 7-6 (9/7), 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-7 (5/7), and 6-4 victory over three hours and forty-six minutes in the first round, he continued to build momentum against Mpetshi Perricard.

After winning the first two sets, Monfils had two match points against a player who used one of the most deadly serves in the game, and he should have won the third set.

Mpetshi Perricard, however, who is currently ranked 30th in the world after rising from 205 at the beginning of 2024, retaliated.

In the end, Monfils’ experience paid off as he maintained his composure to advance to the second round in Melbourne for the seventeenth time, where he will face Daniel Altmaier of Germany.
