Daniil Medvedev faced a challenging start to his Australian Open campaign, narrowly avoiding an upset against unseeded Kasidit Samrej. The match, which took place on Rod Laver Arena, saw Medvedev rally from a two-set deficit to secure a 6-2, 4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory. Medvedev’s performance was marked by a dramatic outburst in the third set, where he smashed his racquet into the net camera, resulting in a brief delay as officials repaired the damage.

Despite the rocky start, Medvedev managed to regain his composure and showcased his experience and resilience in the latter sets. Samrej, making his Grand Slam debut, impressed with his aggressive play and tactical brilliance, but ultimately succumbed to Medvedev’s superior fitness and consistency.

Medvedev’s victory ensures he progresses to the second round, where he will face another debutant, Learner Tien. Reflecting on the match, Medvedev acknowledged the need to improve his performance as he aims for a deep run in the tournament. His determination to be a “disruptor” against top players this season remains strong, and he is focused on delivering better results in the upcoming matches.

Medvedev said: “I watched his matches and didn’t see this level, so I was surprised.

“If he plays like this every match, life can be good — money, girls, casino or whatever. Wish he can play like this every match, but no if I’m facing him. You need to be consistent to make it in tennis, and I wish this for him.”
