Coco Gauff, the WTA world No. 3, has expressed her support for the on-court coaching system at the Australian Open, following her first-round victory against Sofia Kenin. Gauff, who is competing in her fifth Melbourne Grand Slam, praised the format that allows open communication with coaches during matches, a departure from earlier, more restrictive systems.
“I like this format better,” Gauff remarked in her post-match press conference. “You have the choice if you want to be coached or not, and it’s not as awkward as when coaches had to come on court once per set.”
Despite an uneven performance with 32 unforced errors and nine double faults, Gauff secured a 6-3, 6-3 win over the 2020 champion Kenin. The 2023 US Open winner emphasized her trust in her coaching team, led by Matt Daly, who recently replaced Brad Gilbert.
Gauff also addressed concerns about the proximity of opposing teams under the current setup, dismissing fears of negative interactions. “If you’re respectful, they won’t bother you. Most teams on tour are respectful,” she stated.
