Nick Kyrgios says he probably played singles for the last time after losing to Jacob Fearnley of Britain in the opening round of the Australian Open in Melbourne.
The 2022 Wimbledon finalist and home favorite Kyrgios was sidelined by an abdominal strain, and Fearnley won 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 7-6 (7-2) in two hours and 19 minutes on Monday.
Kyrgios talked after the match and said: “Realistically, I can’t really see myself probably playing singles again here, so it was special. Like taking that in, it was pretty good. I didn’t want to just throw in the towel and walk off or retire. I was hurting physically. I respect my opponent. The fans waited hours to come to see me play.”
Kyrgios stated that he still plans to play in the doubles with his countryman and good friend Thanasi Kokkinakis, who overcame his own health problems to defeat him in his first-round match on Monday.
While implying that 2025 will probably be his last year playing singles on the tour, Kyrgios stated he is still optimistic he can have a significant impact at Wimbledon, provided he is healthy when the grass-court competition starts at the end of June.
Fans reacted to Kyrgios’ plausible retirement in singles. One fan wrote: “What reason did he give for not being able to play another singles match?”
Another commented: “Karma is for free.”
One fan wrote: “Will not be missed.”
Another weighed in: “Does he promise?”
