Johannesburg, South Africa – Novak Djokovic, currently ranked world No. 7, successfully fought back from a set down to defeat American teenager Nishesh Basavareddy in the first round of the Australian Open 2025. The victory, however, came with an unusual twist—the presence of Andy Murray in Djokovic’s coaching box.
Djokovic, who enlisted Murray as his coach in November 2024, described the experience as ‘a bit strange’. “We’ve played for over 20 years against each other at the highest level,” Djokovic remarked post-match. “Having him courtside, in my box, was definitely a unique and somewhat surreal experience.”
Despite the initial peculiarity, Djokovic acknowledged the benefits of having Murray on his side. “It’s great to have him on the same side of the net. He gave me some great advice mid-match,” Djokovic noted. “It’s a completely different angle and perspective when you’re watching from the side, and Andy’s insights proved invaluable.”
Murray’s influence was evident as Djokovic bounced back from a shaky start to clinch the match in four sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2). Djokovic praised Basavareddy’s performance, stating, “He was the better player for a set and a half, and he deserves every bit of applause he got when he was exiting the court. A great performance.”
Djokovic is now gearing up for his next match against Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria. As the Serbian ace bids for his 11th Australian Open title and a record 25th Grand Slam, the partnership with Murray brings a fresh dynamic to his quest.
“It’s been an enjoyable experience,” Djokovic concluded. “Hopefully, we don’t stop here.”
