Greek tennis sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas lost to unseeded American Alex Michelsen in the opening round of the Australian Open on Monday, causing a shocking early exit. In what is already being hailed as one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, the world No. 12 lost in four sets, 7-5, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

In the opening sets, Tsitsipas, a three-time Melbourne Park semifinalist, found it difficult to settle into a rhythm as Michelsen took advantage of crucial opportunities.

The American’s unrelenting play ultimately defeated the Greek, who had made a valiant comeback in the third set but was unable to maintain his momentum in the fourth.

Tsitsipas, who was a serious contender going into the tournament, has suffered a serious setback. Outside of the top 100, Michelsen showed remarkable competence under extreme pressure, breaking Tsitsipas late in the last set to end the match.

Fans were surprised by Tsitsipas’s loss in the Australian Open 1st round to Michelsen. One fan wrote on X: “Stef is so cooked. His backhand is weak; he struggles anywhere else but on clay. His career outlook is bleak.”
