With a straight-set victory over Czech Marie Bouskova, Russian teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva made an early statement of intent as she advanced to the Australian Open’s second round.
Andreeva was the talk of the town when, at the age of sixteen, she made her debut at Melbourne Park last year and advanced to the fourth round. She then made it all the way to the French Open semifinals.
Andreeva talked after the win and said: “Honestly, it was a bit hard for me when they started closing the roof (mid-match). It was not easy. But it’s three times better than waiting, going back to the court, and then going back to the player’s lounge. I’m very happy today that I played in a stadium with a roof.”
Fans were amazed by Andreeva after her 1st-round win at the Australian Open. One fan wrote: “She’s amazing and only 17 years old.”
