Alexander Zverev made a winning start at the 2025 Australian Open by convincingly beating former US Open quarterfinalist Lucas Pouille in straight sets. During the post-match interview, the German tennis star lightened the mood with some playful banter aimed at his father and brother, Mischa Zverev.

Zverev’s Family in the Spotlight: This year’s Australian Open has introduced an innovative seating area for coaches, bringing them much closer to the players. When asked about the new setup, Zverev joked, “I hate it. Basically I don’t wanna see them too much in my life but it’s the way it is. I chose them as my coaches unfortunately. Well, I didn’t really have a choice to be honest”. He continued his good-natured ribbing by pointing out that his brother has only one career title compared to his impressive 23.

A Light-hearted Dig at Mischa: Adding to the fun, the interviewer referenced Mischa Zverev’s past claims of being better than Alexander when at their respective bests. Zverev replied with a cheeky grin, “He said that when he’s at his best he’s better than when I am at my best? I mean he has one tour title, I have 23 so. It’s a bit of a tough comparison. He was a great player but I do like my chances.”

Looking Ahead: With his humor and confidence on full display, Alexander Zverev will now face Pedro Martinez on Wednesday, January 15, continuing his bid to clinch his first Slam Down Under. Zverev fans will certainly be hoping this win streak and his spirited attitude will carry him through the rest of the tournament.
