Novak Djokovic is having a rather bizarre (yet successful) year.

The world no.1 started his season in the best possible way after winning Doha, the Australian Open, Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid and (finally!) the Roland Garros. The “Serbinator” started to slow down and look more “beatable” after crashing out in the third round of Wimbledon and in the aftermath of a disastrous campaign in Rio where he lost in the first round to Del Potro before crashing in the second round in doubles.

Recently, Novak had to admit that his he is struggling with a recurring injury that seems to affect his left wrist. This is an extremely worrying situation that has cost two years to his Rio conqueror Juan Martin Del Potro.

I need to rest

After his defeat in Wimbledon, Djokovic announced he wouldn’t have played the Davis Cup tie against Great Britain adding that he was in need of some rest.

“I have a family, and I have a life outside of tennis. I have plenty of things to look forward to. I’m going to obviously pay more attention to those things than tennis in the next period. I need it. It’s been a very successful year so far, but a very long one, exhausting one, in every sense of that word. I just need some rest.” 

I am injured

A few days ago, Djokovic was a bit more outspoken about his conditions after announcing that he is struggling with a recurring injury that will prevent him to play in Cincinnati.

“I am very sad to announce that I won’t be able to play this year in Cincinnati at the Western & Southern Open. I have a recurring injury that has taken its toll on my body due to a very busy and active schedule this year. I have played many matches, and I have to take some rest in order to heal.

I always have my hopes high on returning to Cincinnati and winning the only trophy I am missing in the Masters Series.”

Djokovic still the favorite for the US Open

Even if it’s clear that Djokovic will not be at his very best at the upcoming US Open and even if his strongest rival (at the moment), Andy Murray, is playing at his very best, Novak is still considered as the hot favorite at the Flushing Meadow.

According to the William Hill tennis betting odds for US Open, Djokovic is still the favorite at 8/11. Andy Murray is the second in line (2/1) followed by Milos Raonic, Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka (all at 12/1). William Hill acknowledged that the wildcarded Juan Martin Del Potro is one of the most interesting prospect in New York (16/1) even if he is only ranked world no.141.

A very interesting bet might be on Nick Kyrgios (33/1) or Kei Nishikori (25/1). The 2014 winner, Marin Cilic is only 50/1.

Of course, these quotes could change dramatically if Djokovic pulls out.
