At the ASB Classic in Auckland, Gael Monfils became the oldest person to win an ATP Tour singles title.
In the championship match, the 38-year-old Frenchman, who won his first tour title 20 years ago, defeated Zizou Bergs 6-3, 6-4. He is the oldest champion since the ATP Tour was established in 1990, surpassing Roger Federer, who took home his last title in Basel in 2019.
Since Australian Ken Rosewall, then 43, won a tour-level singles title in Hong Kong in 1977, he is also the oldest man to do so.
Monfils talked about it and said: “Big satisfaction. It’s very special having this 13th title. I don’t win a lot. It’s been more than 20 years I’ve been playing, and it’s just 13 times I ended up winning. It’s a different record. You’re always pleased to have a record, but I want to do more; I want to play a little bit more, so why not win a little bit later on?”
In the opening round of the Australian Open, Monfils will face his countryman, 17-year-old Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
Fans were very happy after Monfils became the oldest titlist after conquering Auckland. One fan wrote: “Big congratulations, Gael. Keep going.”
“No one wants me to stop” 😆
