These are tough days for Serena Williams.
The American had a horrible experience in Rio after she crashed out quite early in singles and doubles. The world no.1 has been struggling with an injury to her shoulder that is preventing her fro playing at her very best especially when serving.
Why Serena could lose her top rank
Serena’s top rank is now under attack from Angelique Kerber that could become the world no.1 if she wins Cincinnati and Serena doesn’t reach the quarters in the same event. For this reason, the American asked a “last minute’s wild card” in Cincinnati, but eventually she admitted she couldn’t compete.
Serena released the following communicate
“I’m very disappointed I’m not able to compete in the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, as I was really looking forward to defending my title. My shoulder inflammation continues to be a challenge, but I am anxious to return to the court as soon as possible.”

The tournament director, Andre Silva, commented
“While we were excited that Serena had accepted a wild card to play in the event, we understand that health is her number one priority. It will only contribute to her longevity and the chance for our fans to see her in Cincinnati for many more years.
We are very fortunate to have a field with WTA stars who now have an opportunity to win this title for the first time.”
Serena has been the world no.1 for the last 306 weeks since February 2013. Is this going to end next week?
