Garbine Muguruza (finally) splits with her coach Sam Sumyk.
The 2-time slam champion was having a rather dysfunctional relationship with Sumik since she hired him back in 2015. The Spaniard won the French Open in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2017; furthermore, she was ranked no.1 back in September 2017. However, she has never managed to find continuity in her results, and now she is just ranked no.27.
Why the split
Garbine couldn’t stomach her latest disappointment in Wimbledon where she lost in the opening match 6-4 6-4 to the world no.121 Beatriz Haddad Maia
.The statement
Garbine released the following statement on Social Media with the following post
“Few words to announce the end of an Extraordinary ride. 2 Grand Slams and World N 1. Beyond grateful for these last 4 years. Merci Sam”
The reaction of her fans was pretty favorable.
The timing is right for both. Sam is a good coach with a great track record of results (Azarenka No 1) and Garbine won 2 majors and No 1 ranking under him, however recent results have been below expectations, noting she has suffered from a number of injuries which has impacted match play time. Garbine has all the weapons to be a consistent presence in the WTA top ten and a regular fixture at the back end of Slams. A new coach with different ideas should help develop her match fitness and the consistency she has lacked in the last few years. I still see Garbine winning around 5 Majors and 25-30 total WTA titles before she finishes on the tour.
