In the opening round of the Australian Open 2025, Naomi Osaka will take on Caroline Garcia, a well-known opponent. All of their matches have been decided in straight sets, and the two have evenly divided their four meetings to tie the head-to-head record at 2-2.
Osaka went on to win the title after winning their first duel at the 2021 Australian Open. Last year, Garcia defeated him in the first round of the Melbourne Major. A few weeks later, the former world No. 1 won the Qatar Open, regaining the lead in their rivalry.
Osaka humorously mentioned that she would prefer to avoid playing in the Australian Open first round again in the 2022 WTA Finals when discussing those objectives.
She said: “My goal now, I think, is to be seeded in Australia. I would really love that. I would love to avoid Caroline Garcia (smiling). Yeah, just being seeded. But not putting too much pressure on myself. I’m just trying to take it day by day.”
When Garcia and Osaka returned to the Australian Open first round, fans were surprised. One fan wrote: “How is it possible?”
