Joao Fonseca is unstoppable. The 18-year-old Brazilian won the Next Gen ATP Finals title in Jeddah to cap off the 2024 season. Before the Australian Open, he broke into the top 120 with the Canberra Challenger title to start the 2025 season.

The young player is two from two in the qualifying draw, and nobody wanted to see him on the other side of the net in Melbourne. In the second qualifying round, Joao defeated Coleman Wong, 20, 6-0, 6-3, in five and a half minutes.

Fonseca dropped nine points behind the first shot while serving at 74%. He put pressure on his opponent and faced no break points. That was too fast for Wong. He played against eight break points and gave up half of the points in his games.

A teenager took five, winning the first set with a bagel and the second set with a double break. Joao tamed his strokes nicely and sailed into the final qualifying round after firing 24 winners and 12 unforced errors.

After the opponent made a forehand mistake, the Brazilian grabbed the match point with a forehand return winner, securing his spot in the last qualifying round.

Fans find Fonseca’s performance in the Australian Open qualifying round impressive. One fan wrote: “Good for him! I really want to see how he fares against the main draw guys.”
