Monica Puig makes history after winning the gold medal

What a week for Monica Puig!

The world no.34 wasn’t one of the favorite (at all!) for a medal in Rio; eventually, she won the gold!

Monica was on fire for the entire week to dismiss Muguruza 6-1 6-1 (3rd round), and beat Kvitova and Kerber in the last two matches.

The final

The key of the match was the decider when Monica raced to get a decisive 5-0 lead. Kerber managed to save 1 match point in the following game to bring the match to a 5-1 scoreline. The last game was a huge drama: Puig save 5 break points (3 consecutive when she was 0-40 down), and Angelique saved two match points. Eventually, the German had to give up and the Puerto Rican won a historical gold. The final score was 6-4 4-6 6-1.

I am in shock. PUIG

Monica won the 9th gold medal in the history of Puerto Rico to comment “I’m in shock, I just don’t even really know what to say. I’m so excited “It’s always tough. There’s always a lot of jitters, a lot of anxiety there every single night. But I knew what was the main goal going in here, and I just can’t believe it.”

In the match for the bronze,  Petra Kvitova defeated Madison Keys 7-5 2-6 6-2 to bring a medal to the Czech Republic.
