Monica Puig and Angelique Kerber will play for the gold medal in Rio de Janeiro.
Puig
The Puerto Rican is having an outstanding run in Rio to trash everyone on her way. The only exception was Petra Kvitova that lost to Monica in 3 sets in the semi-final (6-4 1-6 6-3). Puerto Rico has won just eight gold medals in its history, and Monica is desperate to make it nine.
Puig commented “It would be unbelievable [to win the gold], and it would be the biggest honor in the world. But I’m doing it more for my country. The Olympics isn’t about me; it’s about Puerto Rico, and I know how bad they want this. The island is full of such bad news all the time, so every time there’s a Games and somebody from the island wins a medal everything stops and I know how happy people get. So this one is not for me.”
Kerber
Angelique is having a smashing season: the German has won Melbourne, and she reached the final in Wimbledon; now Angelique has a shot at the gold medal in Rio.
Kerber reached the final without conceding a single set on the way. In the semi, she edged Madison Keys 6-3 7-5.
Angelique commented “It means a lot to be in the final right now. It wasn’t easy to be the next after Steffi [Graf] to reach the final at the Olympics means a lot. It’s really special to be here today, and tomorrow in the finals.”
