What day for Rafael Nadal!

The Spanish legend wins singles and doubles with a 2 hours’ break before retiring from the mixed doubles.

Singles

Rafa defeats Gilles Simon in 7-6 (5) 6-3 after a fierce battle. The Spaniard had a shaky moment in the first set breaker when he squandered a 5-1 lead (then 5-all) before winning the opener. In the second set, Simon tried to stay alive as much as he could, but eventually Rafa found the solution after breaking Gilles in the last game.

Nadal will face Bellucci for a place in the semifinal.

Doubles

After a 2 hours’ break, Rafa went back on court to play doubles with his dear friend Marc Lopez against Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil from Canada. Eventually, the Spanish Team won 7-6 (1) 7-6 (4), and Rafa was caught crying for joy soon after the match. Rafa and Marc will face Tecau and Mergea for the gold.

After the match, Rafa commented “High emotions on court and a lot of nerves.”

Nadal was meant to play the mixed doubles with Muguruza against Stepanek and Hradecka, but eventually he couldn’t make it.
